Esoteric Question of The Day
The Japanese Language is on one hand maddeningly vague and undefined and on the other, like for counting things, equally maddeningly precise/anal retentive.
Junior, along with the other kids in his weightlifting class has to bring in tomorrow some food (healthy stuff) for all to share after class is over and on the way back from work, I mentioned this to my wife and we started talking about what might be a good idea. We tentatively settled on bananas. This prompted the following:
Me:バナナ二束を買うか
Her: バナナに「束」を使うわない。
Me: えぇ？じゃあ、何を使う?
Her: そうねぇぇ。ふさ？
Now I used 「束」as bananas are tied together by their stems in a bunch, logically.....
She thought 「ふさ」is correct as it is used to count clusters of grapes.
Now I know an answer to this will not lead us to Universal Brotherhood and World Peace, but anyone care to weigh in on this?

Maybe because they hang down when they grow, like grapes?
